Hospice care is holistic, specialized care for people living with a serious illness when the focus shifts from cure to comfort. It centers on quality of life - helping patients live as fully and comfortably as possible, while supporting the people who care about them.

At Cascade Health, hospice care is about more than managing symptoms. It’s about honoring each person’s wishes, easing burdens where we can, and making space for meaningful time together.

If you or a loved one has a life-limiting illness, contact us for a no-cost in-home consultation that will help you understand your options and see if hospice is right for you.

What is hospice?

A female doctor is smiling and talking to a senior woman patient who is lying in bed, with a man standing nearby, in a hospital or healthcare setting.

Hospice care is for people living with a serious illness when the focus shifts from cure to comfort.

Rather than continuing treatments aimed at prolonging life, hospice focuses on helping you feel as comfortable as possible - physically, emotionally, and spiritually - while supporting yourloved ones.

Care is centered on quality of life. That may mean managing pain and symptoms, easing stress and helping you spend your time in ways that feel meaningful to you.

Hospice also supports family members and loved ones, offering guidance, reassurance and grief support along the way.

Hospice services are fully covered by Medicare, Medicaid/Oregon Health Plan and most private insurance companies.

When is it time for hospice?

Hospice may be appropriate when a serious illness is no longer responding to treatment, or when the burdens of treatment begin to outweigh the benefits.

We hear from many people that they wish they’d started hospice sooner. Early support can help manage symptoms more effectively, reduce stress and give patients and families more time to focus on what matters most.

If you’re unsure whether hospice is the right step, our team is available to talk through your situation and help you understand your options.

Hospice offers more than just pain or symptom management: It cares not only for the whole patient but also for the whole family. Our team is there to support family caregivers every step of the way. Spiritual and grief counseling are available to you and your family throughout your time on hospice and beyond.

Hospice volunteers may be able to provide additional services such as companionship, help with errands, massage, music therapy, pet therapy and more without charge.

At the core of Cascade Health’s hospice philosophy is the belief that people deserve to be celebrated and attended to at the end of life as much as they are at the beginning. Our care is shaped around the patient and family, with attention to comfort, dignity, and individual wishes at every step.

Hospice care at Cascade Health is guided by a team-based approach that surrounds each patient with support.

We often describe this as a circle of care - bringing together medical expertise, emotional support and practical guidance to meet each person’s unique needs.

How to explore and start hospice

Although we know death is a natural part of life, making the decision to stop curative care and go on hospice is difficult for most people because they feel it is “giving up.”

Hospice isn’t giving up. It’s choosing to focus on comfort and making the most of the time you have left.

Hospice is also not the end, and it’s not just for the last days of life. In fact, research shows that hospice patients live longer on average than non-hospice patients and enjoy a better quality of life. The earlier in the process you begin hospice, the more likely it is to make a positive difference for you.

As a nonprofit organization, helping you and your loved ones understand what hospice is and what options are available is of our mission to support compassionate health care in our community. A Cascade Health staff member can answer your questions and give you the information you need to decide if hospice is right for you.

“Hospice care for me and my husband was exceptional! They were so attentive to my needs and my husband’s. I appreciate how caring and kind everyone was in this difficult time. Thank you.”
