What to Do When You Have Trouble Sleeping

Q: I have a very stressful job and often can't get to sleep at night after a particularly difficult day. I need my sleep — what can I do?

A: Stress can certainly lead to insomnia. First of all, look for ways to reduce the stress that might be causing your sleeplessness. Talk with your supervisor at work. Maybe you can redefine your work demands. It could even be time to look for a less stressful job.

Getting enough sleep is important to good health. Try to spend time relaxing before bedtime, take a warm bath, read, drink a glass of warm milk, or listen to soothing music. If you can't fall asleep once you go to bed, get up and read until you are sleepy.

If the insomnia persists, see your doctor.
