What Are Safe Toys for Asthmatic Children?

Q: What are safe toys for my asthmatic child, and what toys should I avoid?

A: Toys that are furry, soft, cuddly, or stuffed, (especially with feathers) probably should be avoided. If a child does have one of these toys, it is very important that the toy be kept clean and dry.

Also, toys made of latex (such as some dolls) probably should be avoided.

Toys that are fragranced or toys that have strong plastic odors (or other strong odors) might also cause problems and most likely should be avoided.

Otherwise, as long as the toys are age appropriate, the child could play with them under close adult supervision. The adult must watch for signs of labored breathing (or other allergic responses) and have an asthma plan in place if problems occur.
