Protein is essential for health, but too much can cause health problems. Choose proteins by the company they keep; those found in foods that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
Examples include:

  • Legumes – peas, beans, and lentils
  • Soy – tofu, soy beans, soymilk
  • Veggie burgers, egg whites, cottage cheese, and other meat alternates
  • Fish and skinless poultry
  • Nuts

If you eat red meat, choose lean cuts and limit intake to small portions. Eat eggs moderately.
