Food choices are very important in determining the risk for diabetes. Foods that increase the risk for diabetes include refined grains such as white bread, white rice, refined and sweetened breakfast cereals; sugar and sweets; saturated fats and trans fats; and potatoes. To lower risk, choose whole grains, foods high in fiber, low-glycemic foods (i.e., foods that are absorbed slowly), and healthy fats (e.g., vegetable oils, trans-fat-free margarines, and nuts). |
