When the heart beats, pushing blood into the arteries, the pressure rises. This is called systolic blood pressure (BP). The lower pressure between beats is called diastolic BP. They are recorded as systolic/diastolic. Normal BP is less than 120/80. High BP is 140/90 or higher. In between, it is called high normal. Levels 120/80 and above contribute to heart attacks and strokes. A healthy weight, low salt, more fruits and vegetables, and regular exercise help keep blood pressure in a healthy range. |
