Improving lifestyle behaviours – such as quitting smoking, losing weight, and getting regular exercise – in addition to regular screening for cancer could prevent 100,000 cases of cancer and 42,000 cancer deaths each year, according to the Cancer Council. While a small portion of cancers occur due to inherited damaged genes, the risk for most cancers can be dramatically reduced by understanding what causes cancer and taking preventive actions.
